Chapter 4: Longing Always Seems To Be

“My work suggests the finding of an artifact from another time. It imparts a contradictory sense of loss and discovery on the viewer. It taps into a sort of longing that seems to always be in the background, if not the foreground – that memory of a forgotten past.” – Tom Judd

Although Judd’s images, patterns, textures and colors appear erratic, he is able to masterfully synthesize each on canvas to represent a brooding, human desire – to connect with nature despite recognizing that reproduction is a limited means. For Judd, there is beauty to extract from this glum awareness. He passionately and methodically approaches each work with this mentality, revealing in his loose, romantic style a universal consciousness that tugs at notions of remembrance through using familiar images, drawing techniques and color.
