As a painter focused on addressing the concerns of painting – what has been done and what has yet to be done – Arizona artist David Kessler has managed to distinguish himself within the genera of photo-realistic painting through his fresh approach to the relationship between medium and surface.
Using acrylic paint and large aluminum panels, Kessler reveals how the qualities of refracted light can interact within a painting. His final images are a product of pigment, meticulously airbrushed in transparent layers, and strategically placed marks made from various wire brushes. Each work is half refracted light and half paint. This unique art form developed by Kessler over the past twenty five-years grabs hold of viewers by accentuating the paradox of the flat painted surface with the visual illusion of depth and space.
