Tom Judd: “The World is Flat” at Stremmel Gallery by cherie louise turner, art ltd. july 2011

Fifty collages and collage-like paintings make up the bulk of this large show of work by Philadelphia-based artist Tom Judd. These are similar to works Judd has been making for years. They incorporate naturalist-like paintings of birds as well as airplanes and trailers, the Utah desert (where Judd spent a lot of time during childhood), and wallpaper-esque patterns over or next to old hand-written recipes, maps, player-piano roll music, postcards, and long-ago sent envelopes. They’re poetic juxtapositions of nature and home life, travel and memories, aging interiors and expansive views–full of nostalgic appreciation without being cloying. But the undeniable star of the show is the work that grabs you at the front door. To read more, see below or click here.
