Works of Art: Local fauna inspires sculptor’s work on display in new exhibition

by Geralda Miller, 10.24.10

Sculptor Larry Williamson loves to run the hilly terrain near his Gold Hill home with his dogs. He jokes that the daily 2 to 3 mile runs are so his wife of 45 years, Lorna, can stand him. That might be true. However, Williamson’s love of the Nevada landscape is the real reason why the 68-year-old wouldn’t miss starting a day in his running shoes.

The Great Basin has been the inspiration for his folk art, his mojo. “I see things when I run.” he said. “I see coyotes and horses and different kinds of birds. My work probably reflects the kinds of things I see.” To read more, see below.

Hey there Larry and Lorna: I’m so glad I stumbled onto this page. I’ve thought of you often with fond memories from the days you were so good to my children at LCHS. Just got back from a trip to Sedona and recalled the art journal trip you took my boys, Ryan and Taylor, on. Your classes, Larry, were more like an art studio setting and with all the art freedom the students had there was still an expectation to focus on why they were there..it wasn’t a “goof off” class.
I love the twist your journey has taken and how you have expanded now into your own personal art pursuits. Love the creativeness you’ve shown in combining wood carvings and sculpting. Little bits of organic matter (horse tail hair) make them come alive.
I’ve enjoyed our association over the years and may someday drive up and visit you both.
Much more success to both and watch out for the leaded coffee. Mary
