Danny McCaw came to painting the way some people come to a family trade. He grew up in a Southern California house full of artists and by 1998 he was already showing work of his own. His formal study came outside the university system. He spent time at the Scottsdale Artists’ School, worked with the figure painter Steve Huston, and had a long apprenticeship in his father’s studio.

His paintings favor mood and light over description. Figures emerge from and dissolve back into worked, layered surfaces, built up and cut back with sanders, scrapers, wax, and even tar. In recent years he has extended the practice into sculpture, construction, and found material.
